Youth Council off to a great start
What an amazing bunch of young Marlborough people we have this year supporting our local Council and rangatahi.
So far the Marlborough Youth Council (MYT) have
- run an event at the new library where they had approximately 60 – 70 people attending
- provided feedback to the Council Annual Plan submission process
- written their own 2023 Youth Council action plan
- helped with preparations for a youth Matariki event
- represented themselves well at the Swearing in ceremony and
- had 2 formal meetings to allocate funding and hear what is on top for Council.
4 youth councillors are heading to Wellington to attend the Festival for the Future - which will be an amazing opportunity. Sophie Oswald and Georgia Winkler will be at the conference on 8 and 9 June.
There is also one other Youth Council event coming up on Monday 19 June when we will be hosting the Top of the South Youth Council Hui in Marlborough at Lansdowne Sports Hub. Kaikoura, Tasman and Nelson Youth Councils will travel over for the day and share how each council operates, the projects they are working on and have some training with senior Councillors.
Hear what some of our Youth Councillors have to say about their time on the Council.
2023 is my second year with MYC. I feel it is important for young people to affect change in their communities. If you want to have input into decisions about issues in your community, you can participate in youth councils to make your voice heard. I enjoy working alongside my peers, where everyone has a right to have their opinion listened to, regardless of age or gender. I hope to advocate for the young people in our district and help identify and help youth-related issues within Marlborough - Isabella Baldwin, Y11
I've been on youth council for 2 years and its been one of the coolest experiences I've had, we get to meet and work with so many influential people. I highly recommend you apply next year! - Sophie Oswald, Y10
This is my first year being a part of the Marlborough Youth Council, and we have already hosted a big event. Youth week was combined with Tech week at the new library! We had so many people show up it was awesome. Lots of young people came along and joined in the scavenger hunts, and listened to the talks. My favourite part of being a member of the Youth Council is seeing the impact we have on the choices made around community events. - Arwen Attridge, Y10
This is my first year in the Youth Council and it's already been such an amazing experience! I've been able to join in on so many opportunities and many events. I feel like myself and all the other members of the 2023 Youth Council get a really good student voice that helps us to be heard in a more efficient way! - Lavyna Singh, Y10
