Societies Reflection: Olivia, Lucy, Riley and Pippa
by Marlborough Girls' CollegeWOW!
Marlborough Girls' College - June 27, 2023
The teams each had five design briefs to pick from and over the course of two terms collaborated to create a unique costume. Find out more about the projects below.
Group: Rose, Jemima, Molly and Te Ana
Theme: Below the surface
- The meaning behind our project is to show and bring awareness about how the climate change and all of the rubbish is affecting the ocean and sea animals.
Group: Olivia, Lucy, Riley, Pippa
Theme: Societies reflection
- Symbolises the reflection that society can have on a mindset especially a teenage girl e.g. be skinnier, be prettier, be what the media tells you to be. The design reflects on the fact that you don't have to look like the girls in the magazines to be beautiful and your size doesn't represent your self worth. Spread your Wings and be your own strong amazing person.
Group: Sophie, Hailey, Milly and Jordyn
Theme: Imaginary Friend
- Inspired by the children's book “The Gruffalo” - the Sigma Beast is a grey furry creature that protects anyone in need. He is very strong, independent and brave. His looks can come across very scary which is intimidating when predators approach him. He is an ideal imaginary friend because The Sigma Beast can protect you from all danger but also be your best companion.
Group: Chelsea and Jessica
Theme: Nature
- The soft flowy fabric mimics the way the rain falls to the ground and the dress has many colours mainly being a silver organza representing the silver lining to any storm. The umbrella is a cloud with raindrops hanging of it, it shows how sometimes you can’t escape a storm.
Group: Abigail, Taylor-Rose and Abbie
Theme: Imaginary Friends
- Inspired by kids arts and crafts and their raw imagination. We wanted to have lots of fun creating this piece and let our crazy inner child go wild! When kids are able to create and share their ideas it gives them the ability to grow their imagination, including forming imaginary friends. We hope our creation can inspire kids to always be creative, not grow up too fast and HAVE FUN!
Group: Sox
Theme: Nature
- Called Wonders of the Forest - this outfit is heavily inspired by mushrooms and fae, and is made out of: Cardboard, fabric, paint, and hot glue. There is a messy and uneven look to it, but there's a surprise lurking around every corner in the forest.
Group: Greer and Phoebe
Theme: Gasp
- Inspired by the character Neytiri from Avatar, the headpiece is made out of table tires. Used a long black wig and braided it together and as the character Neytiri is blue the model had her whole body painted blue with face paint.
Group: Samantha, Paige, Bella, Piper
Theme: Mirrors
- Inspired by mirrors which are normally behind a frame. The mirrors created a gasp effect when the light reflects off of the dress and creates a bedazzled illusion into the gasping crowd!
Group: Amelia and Isla
Theme: Nature
- One of the most harmful types of pollution in the ocean is plastic waste. Millions of tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean every year and it can take hundreds of years to decompose. Plastic waste is often ingested by marine animals, which can cause them to become sick or even die. It also affects the food chain, as smaller fish that have ingested plastic are eaten by larger fish, which can also become sick or die.
Group: Storm and Emilie
Theme: Gasp
- Inspired by a flower because it can be a beautiful and unique piece of art. The intricate details and vibrant colours of the petals can make the costume look like a real flower come to life. The size of the costume can also make it stand out in a crowd and create a sense of awe and wonder for those who see it.
Group: Isabella and Chloe
Theme: Imaginary Friend
- Did you ever have an imaginary friend? A friend that went everywhere with you and you could tell anything to. They could've been a pretty princess or a big scary monster but no matter how big or small they were you loved them unconditionally. This princess dress has a beautiful rustic castle that lays beautifully in our cloud skirt. The castle is made from cardboard and plaster to give it texture and dimension and the skirt is made of a baby blue fabric with stuffing scattered on it for the clouds.
Group: Aimee, Sylvia, Maddalynne and Sarah
Theme: Wearable art based on what you see online vs. what you see in reality.
- The right side represents a perfect life with no mistakes, while the left side represents the reality of people facing real life struggles. Our wearable art reminds us that social media can be both a tool for connection and a source of pressure.
Group: Charlotte, Zara and Emma
Theme: Gasp
The top has lots of details that pulled the dress together and made it look great. The added lights throughout the skirt add to the Gasp factor. The flowers make it represent beauty.
