MGC Underwater Hockey

Marlborough Girls' College —

The MGC Underwater Hockey team had quite an eventful and challenging weekend at the Central Zones Tournament in Wellington!

The MGC Underwater Hockey team travelled to Wellington to compete in the Central Zones Tournament, with players from Wellington and Nelson schools also attending. It was the girls first year playing in the Senior Girls grade, a big step up from the Junior Grade. Due to the MBC team not having enough travelling players, the girls also played for the Marlborough College Composite team in the senior open grade which includes all the senior boys teams.  Quite an incredible feat!

Despite the games being challenging, we saw the tournament as a great opportunity to improve fitness and skill as we had a range of abilities to play against. Many teams have NZ reps playing for them, so competition is tough. We placed 5th in the tournament, earning us a  place at the School Nationals in late August.

Charlotte Hutchison won the MVP award for the team and we were very proud of the positive, gutsy and committed attitude all the girls consistently displayed .

Special thanks to Marcus Wright who won the 'coach of the tournament' award, team manager Nicola Poswillo and parent help Ank Bailey. Special acknowledgement to Pelorus Trust for the grant to help with travel costs.

Overall, it's a story of perseverance, teamwork and community support, showcasing the spirit of achievement in sports despite the challenges faced.
