Success for rowers at the South Island Secondary Schools Rowing Regatta
From Friday 7th to Sunday 9th March, the MGC Rowing team competed in the South Island Secondary Schools Rowing regatta in Twizel.
This was the first regatta of the season where our students represented MGC, and competed against other South Island school crews.
Friday consisted of heats, with tough progressions. Some crews qualified straight to A finals, while many raced in repechages on Saturday. Saturday afternoon finals began. The team came back with three Gold medals and two Bronze, one of MGC's most successful rowing regattas. Crews and students in medal winning races are listed below.
Under 17 coxed four - 1st place - Eliza Glover, Anna Hurren, Celia Spencer and Georgette Herkt, coxed by Molly Hoban.
Under 15 coxed four - 1st place - Charlie Bennett, Maisie Shenfield, Poppy Fernandez and Emma Eyles, coxed by Hayley Sutherland.
Under 15 coxed octuple - 3rd place - Charlie Bennett, Maisie Shenfield, Poppy Fernandez, Emma Eyles, Izzy McLauchlan, Maggie Clark, Hannah Kole and Georgie Fissenden coxed by Hayley Sutherland.
Under 18 coxed four - 3rd place - Eliza Glover, Anna Hurren, Lilly Smith and Iris Vavasour coxed by Molly Hoban.
Under 17 coxless pair - 1st place - Eliza Glover and Anna Hurren.
All students represented MGC with pride and should be proud of their success at this regatta. The team are now preparing for New Zealand Secondary Schools rowing which is held this year at Lake Karapiro.
A shout out and thank you to our hardworking coaches is also well deserved - Joe Bennion, Marion Horwell, Richard Shenfield, Jess Bennett, Ella Barnes and Eliza Glover.
