Whānau Reading Challenge

Colleen Shipley —

Since the beginning of the year, our Year 9 and 10 whānau classes have been reading up a storm trying to be the first group to reach the height of their Dean in books.

Mr. Macri’s whanau class 10MLLK reached that goal this week and were treated to a celebratory morning tea. It is great to see the students embracing ‘reading for pleasure,’ as it enhances their academic performance and well-being as well as increasing empathy.

House Reading Challenge

As we move closer to the holidays, it’s time to promote the House Reading Challenge, which takes place in May.

Students can gain house points for any book started after April 1st, and finished before the end of May. To earn a point, the student must come and chat to a Librarian about the book they have read and why they enjoyed it. The point of the competition is to celebrate reading, giving our readers the opportunity to earn house points and to chat about the books they have been reading. We always enjoy the conversations we have with students about what they have been reading and it gives library staff the opportunity to promote other books they know the student may enjoy.

We do allow students to borrow through the holidays so now is the time to come and select some reading and get started. Books from home are still eligible for the house challenge but school library books get a bonus point.
