Junior Underwater Hockey Team Qualify for NZSS Champs

Marlborough Girls' College —

Congratulations to our Junior Girls team placing 5th in the Central Zone Qualifying Tournament. Placing 5th qualifies them for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Underwater Hockey Championships (Schools Nationals).

Marlborough also sent a Junior Girls and Senior (combined MGC/MBC students) teams to the annual Underwater Hockey South Island Champs in May.

Here is a brief report from Chloe Vervaart (Year 12), one of the participants in the combined team.

"The results were the combined Senior team (with no subs!) placing 2nd in the C Grade, and for the School Grade the Junior Girls (in their first tournament) ending up placing 4th (by sudden death). They played exceptionally well and learnt and gained a lot from this tournament, which they will take to the Central Zones Secondary School Champs which will be held in Wellington at the beginning of July."

Marlborough Underwater Hockey would like to thank the Redwood Trust and the Blue Door for helping us pay for a lot of our trip expenses. We would also like to thank Shaun Musgrove our coach, Richie Price and Casey Evans our Referees and Nicola Poswillo our Manager for making this all happen. Thanks to Wilkes Resource Management for our hoodies and Riverside Refurbishers for our togs.

Keen to give Underwater Hockey a go?

Underwater hockey, also known as Octopush, is a globally played limited-contact sport in which two teams compete to manoeuvre a puck across the bottom of a swimming pool into the opposing team's goal by propelling it with a hockey stick.

We currently have a Junior team of 11 students competing and 3 keen Senior students. The Marlborough Underwater Hockey Club administers the sport for our students and provides opportunities for them to play in a range of competitions.

If you are keen to come and find out what this sport is all about, the contact details for the Marlborough Underwater Club are:
