Board Update
Brian Roughan, MGC Chair, shares an update from the Board.
The board has recently created a permanent Tangata Whenua representative position on the board. We welcome Michelle Lavender as the representative for the first 3 year term. We appreciate this Māori voice to compliment the Māori student voice on the board.
At our last board meeting we had a lengthy discussion on how the year 11 teaching and learning should look. Michelle Tewkesbury outlined to the Board the Ākonga learning capabilities - a shared language of learning - which included the new Year 11 learning redesign. The board accepted the proposal for MGC to stop providing NCEA level 1 from 2024. Learners will still be prepared for NCEA level 2. We want to move away from the constant assessment driven planning and practice with a rehearsal strategy and superficial learning (learn to pass exams). The over assessment has negative impacts on, student wellbeing, teacher workload and time for teaching and learning (too much time spent on assessment). This means planning and practice is learning-led (not assessment driven) and therefore becomes engaging, challenging and contextual.
The rebuild is now gaining momentum with the laying of the Mauri stone for the co-located colleges’ campus. We will start to see construction on site with the new hockey turf the first project.
Nga mihi nui
