Careers Update

Karen Tattersall —

It's been a busy term for us in the Careers Department, read more below.

Future of Work Conference Inspires 1,500 Students in Marlborough

A highly successful Future of Work conference took place at the ASB Theatre and Marlborough Events Centre, attracting an impressive attendance of 1,500 students. The event showcased over 40 industries, 80 businesses, and higher education providers, aiming to inspire students and expose them to a wide array of opportunities and career pathways.

Distinguished guest speakers, including keynote speaker Jazz Thornton, addressed the students, providing valuable insights into post-high school options and available career paths. Mayor Nadine Taylor also attended the conference, emphasizing the significance of the event in exposing young individuals to the diverse range of jobs and careers available in Marlborough, along with educational prospects.

Organized by the Graeme Dingle Foundation Marlborough in collaboration with the Council, the conference has been a resounding success since its inception in 2019. This year's event, which combined the career fairs of Marlborough Boys' and Girls' Colleges, was offered to students free of charge, thanks to generous funding from the Rātā Foundation, Lotteries Community Fund, and OneFortyOne.

Defence Forces Day

MGC had an exciting visit on Tuesday, June 13th, as the Airforce, Navy, and Army landed their aircraft on the school fields. Students had the opportunity to explore the helicopter, interact with the crew, and learn about potential career paths in the Defence Forces and the Police. During lunchtime, students could ask questions and gain valuable insights from the personnel representing these military branches.
