Year 9 Update

Sophie Taetuli, Year 9 Dean —

A review of Term 1 from our Year 9 Dean, Mrs Sophie Taetuli.

Kia ora tātou

From beginning a new school, to navigating new friendships, expectations, responsibilities and showing huge resilience and flexibility throughout the covid wave - the first term has been one big roller coaster ride!

It has been fabulous to see so many Year 9s signing up to the different clubs at expo day, joining sports teams and cultural groups, becoming leaders within their whānau class, school council, Junior House leaders and Marlborough Youth Council.

Our Mahi Tahi days at Anakiwa were definitely a highlight with all students demonstrating our school values kotahitanga, manaakitanga and whanaungatanga to embrace the challenges and step out of our comfort zones throughout the day - Tumeke !!

Our Top Tips for Term two

  1. Each day read the notices on the portal and Google classroom to keep up to date with what's going on at MGC and get involved in our kura.

  2. Managing ourselves. This means
    - getting organised with your gear the night before
    - charge your laptops
    - set your alarm to get up with plenty of time to have a good breakfast
    - arrive at school on time.

  3. Sleep. Teenagers need approximately 8 - 10 hours of sleep each night to feel refreshed and ready to take on the day. Sleep is vital for brain development, physical health, emotional well-being, and focus at school.

  4. Cellphones. It is no secret, the older teens get, the harder it is to monitor and manage screen time. I recommend whānau ‘tech-free time’ where you hear about each other's day, help with dinner, go for a walk, play games, read a book. Pressing pause on the digital world together is a great way to reset, to quieten the relentless ‘ding’s’ of notifications and just connect face-to-face. Whether it is for a couple of hours each day, or giving yourselves a switch off time at night, it will benefit everyone’s Hauora.

  5. And the final tip is to enjoy your holiday! Get out in the fresh air, mask free! Relax and come back to school feeling refreshed and ready for an awesome term 2!
