Arts Update

Ewa Zielinska —

This year we have Ms Ewa Zielinska leading a variety of arts programmes throughout the school. Here is an update on what has been happening so far.

A Mural project has kicked off with the ultimate goal being a new mural for the back of our old library building. Marlborough artist Kylie Fleur is carrying out workshops with a selected group of students and they are working on a collective design. We are excited to see what this will look like!

During Term 1 we had a very successful outdoor Open Stage where students were invited to perform at lunchtime. In total we had 75 students and 20 local artists perform during this time, a fantastic achievement.

There were also 2 concerts on the Outdoor Open Stage in the final week of Term 1. A local group The Orphans rehearsed with some of our students and performed at lunchtime on Tuesday. MBC's Rock Band The Breath Mints gave us a surprise performance on the last day of term and we were delighted to see some of our students and teachers joining in.

One of our whānau classes in Year 10 has completed four Emotional regulation drama support workshops. This is an exciting new initiative we plan to continue in Term 2.

A new drama group is starting in Term 2 which will be supported by the Creative Kids Foundation. They will be working on a piece of Devised Theatre which will be entered into the Theatre Fest Festival in July. In addition to this there is an ongoing Film Project called “Who are we?”

May is a NZ Music Month. In conjunction with MBC we are planning to organise two concerts for students in Term 2, one at MBC and one at MGC.
