Making Treasures

Alia Malik —

On Tuesday the 20th June, a combined year 10 Jewellery class had the pleasure of learning about the design process from Jared Haley, who currently freelances with Weta workshop.

He shared with us his creations from the sword from Mulan live action to creating a capybaras ring for a friend. He showed the students how he uses different kinds of 3D software to create rings and effects like antiquing.

He also showed the students how they would find out their own ring size. As a parting gift Jared left a model for a dragon ring us to print out on our 3D printers.

The students elected for a glow in the dark yellow filament - this is what it looked like.

It was very interesting to look behind the scenes of how such intricate, beautiful jewellery was made. The different programs and tools you can use and what jewellery is truly capable of was introduced thoughtfully and I really enjoyed the presentation. The examples were stunning and opened my mind to the possibilities and true artistry behind jewellery.
