Learning to Lead

Marlborough Girls' College —

This week a group of our Manutaki travelled to Nelson to take part in a day to collaborate with student leaders from other schools from Te Tau Ihu.

They were given the opportunity to be inspired by keynote speakers and learn strategies to be effective leaders. There were breakout sessions with a focus on wellbeing, leaving a legacy, and being effective communicators.

We have heard great things about the day from those who made the bus trip over the hill, and in the coming months we look forward to seeing their leadership skills in action around the College! Some of our Manutaki share their thoughts on the day below.

A highlight for me would be the getting feedback and ideas from other prefects from other schools. It was nice to meet students who were welcoming and encouraging as well as representing their schools in a positive way. It was a nice friendly atmosphere

I had the chance to visit Nelson to connect with leaders from surrounding schools and work with them to improve our Kura. I learned several things during this fantastic opportunity, but one that truly remained with me was what the Nelson Deputy Mayor, Rohan O’Neill Stevens, said: "Never forget to thank your village, they are the foundation of all your successes". His words of inspiration resonated with me and made me recognise just how important it is to express gratitude for my family, friends, and teachers because they all contributed to who I am. This is something I'll always remember. - Temiah Cyster, Manutaki Tāwāhi | International
My faviourite highlight from the leadership fourm last week was that I got the chance to meet other students who are also leaders in their own schools and two quotes by Rohan O'Reilly Stevens "always thank the people in your lives" and "must celebrate every little success".  These are the quotes I took away from this course. - Anafuamanu Te'o, Manutaki Pasifika
During this exciting opportunity, I had the pleasure of meeting new leaders from our surrounding schools and exchanging ideas, projects and propositions that create positive communities within their Kura. I also learnt many things from Gavin Millar about my health and wellbeing and how I can better manage my stress from a personal perspective. I really loved this experience and believe it will benefit anyone who has the chance to attend. - Hayley Gush, Manutāiko | Deputy Head Girl
"If it is to be, it is up to me". I am grateful to have had the opportunity to go to Nelson and interact with the Manutaki from several other schools. This was an amazing chance to exchange goals and ideas, as well as to collaborate and work on issues that affect all of our schools. I gained much understanding into the inner workings of surrounding schools and what we can implement into ours. From the workshops, I gathered valuable knowledge on how to manage my stress in a productive and healthy way. I am incredibly appreciative of this forum and the opportunity to be a part of it. - Prachi Singh, Manutaki Rūnanga Ākonga | Head of School Council
A highlight for me about the leadership course was interacting with the other schools and learning about their different approaches to school activities and learning, it was nice to have new perspectives. - Charlie Richmond
