Dare to Lead: Real Projects, Real Change
Our Dare to Lead students at Marlborough Girls’ College have hit the ground running this term, launching a wide range of social action projects that are already making a positive impact in our community.
Their leadership, creativity, and compassion are shining through as they tackle causes close to their hearts and work together to make a difference. Every group has linked their mahi to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, which has been a main focus throughout this course.
Among the inspiring initiatives currently underway:
Mount Vernon Scavenger Hunt – Pictured below is the group organising a community scavenger hunt up Mount Vernon, with proceeds and entry fees going towards items needed linked to quality education. Thanks to the incredible generosity of local businesses, they’ve secured a wide range of prizes to give away. Their project combines fun, fitness, and connection to our local environment.
Quiz Night for Sustainability – This group is hosting a quiz night to raise money for sustainable energy initiatives at MGC, showing how fun events can drive real change. They are also going to launch an education campaign around solar power and link local businesses in to give free quotes! Watch this space!
24-Hour Fitness Challenge – One group is planning an endurance-based fitness event to raise awareness around mental health, promoting the powerful link between physical activity and emotional well-being.
Marlborough Schools Uniform Drive – With a focus on equity and support for local whānau, one group is coordinating a uniform drive to collect and redistribute school uniforms to those in need across Marlborough.
Volunteering at Riding for the Disabled – One group is generously giving their time to support our local Riding for the Disabled, providing hands-on help and forming connections through this rewarding work.
Fundraising for Marlborough Four Paws – With a love for animals driving their efforts, this team is raising funds to support the rescue and care work of Marlborough Four Paws.
Dog Walking Service – A student-led dog walking initiative is providing a helpful service to locals while encouraging responsible pet care and strengthening community connections.
Beach and Park Clean-Ups – Several students have taken on the task of caring for our environment through organised beach and park clean-up events, showing kaitiakitanga and pride in our beautiful region.
The generosity of Marlborough’s local businesses and the dedication of our students has been truly inspiring and they are just getting started! These projects are more than just classwork — they are student-led acts of leadership, empathy, and community connection.
