Media Students Meet Podcasting Legend Lucy Blakiston

Julie Brown - Media Teacher —

Senior Media Studies students were lucky enough to meet with MGC old girl and previous Head Girl, Lucy Blackiston earlier this term.

Lucy is a successful and inspirational woman who is the CEO and founder of a media company with a social following of over 3.6 million people. Lucy's company consists of a daily newsletter titled 'Culture Vulture,' and two podcasts, the aim of which is to bring news to young people making it interesting and accessible in a format that appeals to modern audiences. Younger generations are increasingly accessing the news via social media. As a result, Lucy uses Tik Tok and Instagram in addition to her newsletter and podcast formats to connect with her audiences.

Students had the pleasure of having Lucy give them her top tips for creating a successful podcast and were given some really crucial advice. She told them that the best way to achieve success and learn is "to fail and fail fast". She encouraged students to step out of their comfort zones and learn what works and what doesn't by making mistakes. She also had some great marketing advice for some of our Media students who are also working on a business project called ReFloat making old pool toys into waterproof bags.

Lucy is currently back in Blenheim working on a new book set to be released later this year. She described the book as being a collection of advice that she wished she had as a young person when she was at school. We look forward to reading her sage advice!
