Heading back to school after a long break away can bring on lots of feelings and emotions.
It’s common to feel excited, nervous and anxious all at the same time when returning to school. Be assured, even though you will have a range of emotions and reactions going back to school, most will settle over time as routines are re-established.
To help you transition back to school this week you will be welcomed and supported by your Whānau Teachers. The days have been with your Whānau class settling back into school routine and reconnecting with friends both new and old. Our beginning of year programme, for Thursday and Friday, is packed full of fun and interactive activities that will help you reconnect and re-engage with school.
Talk about going back to school with your rangatahi. Ask them how they’re feeling – what they’re looking forward to and what they’re worried about. Explain that it’s normal to feel different emotions like worry and excitement at the same time. Acknowledge and normalise their feelings and focus on the positives to help them feel good about going back to school.
Getting enough sleep is essential for students to be successful at school. Set an earlier and consistent bedtime. All electronic devices should be turned off and left overnight somewhere central like the kitchen bench well before bedtime.
Make sure your young person eats breakfast and has a a healthy lunch and water bottle each day. Children who eat nutritious and regular meals function better. They do better in school, and have better concentration and more energy.
If your child needs further support, the MGC Guidance team is here to help. Appointments can be made with our Psychologist or Counselling team using the school bridge app or by filling in an appointment request in the Guidance Office.
