Belonging to MGC

Emily Stenhouse —

As the school year progresses, many of our students find themselves balancing academic responsibilities with extracurricular activities, such as sports and cultural groups.

I have had the pleasure of supporting our students this term at so many different events and occasions. Whether it was Ovation and Cresentia at Big Sing, our Junior Basketball Team, Pacifica Dance Group or encouraging the cast of Legally Blonde, it is definitely heartening to see the involvement of our students in activities outside the classroom.

Recent studies have shown that involvement in these activities can significantly enhance a student's academic performance and overall sense of belonging within the school community.

Boosting Academic Achievement

One might assume that dedicating time to sports or cultural clubs could detract from academic pursuits due to the time commitment involved. However, research consistently indicates the opposite. Students engaged in these extracurricular activities often display higher academic achievement. Here’s why:

Time Management Skills:

Juggling practice schedules, rehearsals, and academic deadlines teaches students to manage their time efficiently. This skill translates into better study habits and organisation, which are critical for academic success.

Enhanced Focus and Discipline:

Regular involvement in structured activities instills a sense of discipline and focus. Athletes, for example, develop perseverance and the ability to concentrate under pressure—traits that are beneficial in a classroom setting.

Improved Cognitive Function:

Physical activity associated with sports increases blood flow to the brain, enhancing cognitive functions such as memory and problem-solving skills. Similarly, engaging in cultural activities like music and drama stimulates creative thinking and intellectual engagement.

Fostering a Sense of Belonging

Feeling connected to a school community is crucial for a student’s emotional well-being and overall development. Participation in sports and cultural activities plays a significant role in fostering this sense of belonging:

  1. Manaakitanga: Team sports and cultural clubs provide opportunities for students to build strong, supportive relationships with their peers. These connections create a network of support and a sense of community.

  2. Kotahitanga: Extracurricular activities often bring together students from diverse backgrounds with common interests, promoting inclusivity and acceptance. This diversity helps students feel valued and respected, enhancing their sense of belonging.

  3. Whanaungatanga: Representing the school in sports or cultural events instills pride and a sense of identity. Whether it’s wearing the school colors at a game or performing in a school play, these activities strengthen students' connection to our school.

  4. Kairangi: Successfully participating in extracurricular activities boosts self-esteem and confidence. Achieving personal and team goals helps students recognise their abilities and potential, reinforcing their sense of belonging.

So, whether you're a seasoned athlete, a budding artist, or someone exploring new interests, remember that your involvement in these activities is more than just a pastime - it's a stepping stone to academic success and a deeper connection with MGC.

Let's embrace all the opportunities our school offers and strive for excellence both inside and outside the classroom!
