JAZZ COMBO FINAL

Sam Smith, Associate Principal —

For the first time in a very long time Massey High School's Jazz Combo made it to the final four in the Auckland Schools Jazz Combo Competition.

Having competed against a field of 31 Jazz Combo groups our Massey High School Combo has made it to the final four. The group consists of;

Kai Smith (11KMA) - Saxophone

Josephine Faiva (12KSG) - Trumpet

Tui Faatui  (12MSD) - Keys

Alan Motufoua (13KMI) – Guitar

Alini Pulusi (12TFR) – Bass

Blessed Tumua (12KVE) – Drums

On Saturday, the 12th August our Jazz Combo team performed at the Point Chevalier RSA against three other schools vying for the top spot in the Jazz Combo Final.

We were treated to three songs from each of the four schools competing.

Massey performed the following set :

My Fluffy Bunny; Autumn Leaves; and Sticks. They performed their set competently and professionally. The last number was superb, the students looked like they were having such fun.

I am no Jazz expert but the energy and enthusiasm that they put into the number was infectious with everyone cheering at the end.  The students were fantastic ambassadors for the school and I have to say the best dressed in their waistcoats and bow-ties.

I want to thank Mr Baldwin, Mr Loretz  and Asher Truppman-Lattie for all their hard work with the students and each of the tutors that helped. Plus a special thanks to all the students' parents; it must take a special kind of love to listen to one's son or daughter practising on the trumpet, the saxophone and/or the drums every day! Hats off to you all.

Unfortunately, the group did not win the competition but they are still one of the top four school Jazz Combos in Auckland and were awarded the Gold Award.
