CARPENTRY & BUILDING ACADEMIES

Nick Hackett —

Celebrate a house removal

On Thursday 5th March the first of four houses that are built on site at Massey High School by our academies, was removed and taken away by Craig Walker House Removals to be sited in South Auckland. The houses are built for Kainga Ora, (previously Housing NZ), and this house was mainly built by the L3 students in 2019, under the supervision of our registered builders and tutors.

It is a three bedroom house of approximately 100 square metres house and is fully fitted out and finished. The students were involved in floor framing, flooring, frames, trusses, fascia board and soffits, weatherboards internal linings and painting the exterior of the houses. They also installed the doors and windows amongst other tasks. They also gain experience in helping out a tradesmen and were able to work alongside them to get a taste of some other trades, such as plumbing and electrical work.

The course allows the students to gain NCEA levels Two and Three, plus Site Safe, First Aid and BCITO, (Building Construction Industry Training Organisation), construction certification.

Massey High School is one of very few schools in New Zealand to offer this opportunity to the community. We also welcome students from other schools in to this programme and currently have students from Bay of Islands College and Kelston Deaf Education Centre participating in 2020.

In 2020 our construction tutors are Cameron Fergus, (site manager), Paul Simpson, Luke Kanuta, Simon Mackie, and Ilay Mataraki.
