NEWS FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT

Nicholas Baldwin —

We have had some great results over the last couple of days with groups in RockQuest and the Big Sing.

On the evening of Saturday 10 June two Massey High School bands competed in the Auckland Central Regional finals of the RockQuest. The bands were ‘Oath to Azreal’ (Angel Chang, Cameron Carter, Cameron Baxter, Breanna Brown and Ethan Fasi-Mohenoa) and ‘S.P.A.M’ ( Tylah Halavaka, Huia King, Monkia Rapira, Josephine Favia, Kai Smith, Tui Faatui, Alan Motufoua, Sione Tangataolakepa and Alini Pulusi).

Both groups performed fantastically and Oath to Azreal placed 1st!!!! (The first time this has happened in a number of years).

They will now produce a 15-minute video for them performing as submission for entry into the National Finals held later this year. I will keep you posted with updates and will send through YouTube links to both groups RockQuest performances when Jim uploads them.

On Tuesday 13 June the Choir performed at the Big Sing. They represented the school exceptionally and their set was an absolute treat to watch (shout out to Mrs Shirley Cranston for coming along and supporting us). They performed one song from their set (chosen by the judge) again that evening in the Gala concert. This performance went very well and the Choir won the only award given out on the night – ‘The Gala Performance Award for the Choir which impressed, delighted and captivated the audience’.

All of these groups have worked incredibly hard to prepare for these competitions. They are very proud of their achievements and I would encourage you to congratulate any students from the above-mentioned groups (I won’t list the Choir members here). I thank you all for your support of our groups by letting them out of class to attend lessons and practices. It is this hard work behind the scenes that ensures we see these great results!

I would encourage you all to attend the Music Soiree evening on Wednesday 5 July in the BRPAC to see these groups perform and to check out our new orchestra ‘Crazy for Classics’, our Chamber Group, our Funk Band, our Jazz Combo, our Female Vocal Ensemble as well as some special performances from some Year 13 students. It will be a treat!!!!
