ACADEMY NEWS

Academies —

Early Childhood Academy News by Ranaa Roshan & Jayden Alesich our Academy Prefects.

The Early Childhood Academy is one of the many academies that Massey High School has to offer. All the academies are based on authentic learning and vocational skills that enable our students to gain their NCEA plus other various pathway endorsements and qualifications.

The Early Childhood Academy course is available to Year 11, 12 and 13 students, who are interested in learning more about children under the age of 6. The Year 11 students join the Level Two course and have Early Childhood Education, (ECE), one hour a day every day and the Year 13 students have ECE two hours a day each day.

The students also gain work experience on the course and every Tuesday go out to childhood centers nearby, such as Red Hill Community Kindergarten, Junior Junction, Massey Primary, and Royal Road Kindergarten, etc. We are very fortunate to have centers close by that allow our students to gain more experience with children of all ages and to work in that type of environment.

Right now, our Early Childhood classes are making many different types of materials for young ones. For example, formal clothing garments, rattles, board games and books. This course is based on unit standards just like the other academies at our school. All students currently taking Early Childhood find it “fun”, “enjoying” but also “challenging.” The students would all recommend this course because they get to learn and interact with children, meaning that this course is also very hands on as well. It is a truly authentic learning course.
