EARLY CHILDHOOD ACADEMY

Anna North —

The Early Childhood (ECE) Academy Terms 1 and start of Term 2.

The level 2 students have been studying the basic needs of the child and have completed the construction of their own baby to look after as well as attending ECE centres for contact with real children of preschool age. They have finished two units of work and are awaiting the results of these. We have had Jane from Plunket in to work with the students. Soon they will be starting Unitec one day a week and will be out of school working at UNITEC all day Thursdays. (June 6th is their first day and this will continue till the end of Term3).

Level three have been working on units related to premature babies, children’s grown, development and learning, the ECE curriculum called Te Whariki as well as a unit about appropriate age play. The students have made a range of toys suitable for an infant, toddler and a young child. They are trailing these with the children at their ECE centres. They attend their centres on a Wednesday afternoon and go to UNITEC all day to do Psychology papers on a Friday.
