PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Principal's Message —

Welcome to Term Two

Kia Ora All

As many of you may already know, we lost one of our students on the first Thursday of the school holidays. Keenan Matthes was a Year 12 student here at Massey and was tragically killed in train accident at Ranui station. On hearing that Keenan had been killed I cried and cried and cried. He was a fabulous young man with the World at his feet. I loved spending time with Keenan. He had a fantastic sense of humour, very witty and very dry. We talked about Rugby and University and leadership. He was thoughtful, humble and gracious. Keenan’s whanau are a marvel. I found Keenan’s Mum and Dad consoling me when I was supposed to be consoling them. I am reminded that life is indeed short and that we must make the most of every day. I was also privileged to see a community at its very best in supporting a grieving family. Humble thanks to all students, past and present staff and parents that attended the services for Keenan and have supported his whanau over this sad time.

Thank you to all our coaches and managers who have volunteered to look after our sports teams over the coming months. Without your commitment we would not be able to have the wide variety of sporting codes that we offer here at Massey.

To our students. Be brave and be positive. Cast your net wide. Be courageous about meeting people, about having a go at something you haven’t done before. Have big dreams and ambitions. School should prepare you to be resilient and equip you with the grit and determination to succeed and overcome the inevitable knock-backs along the way. It’s easy to feel defeated at times, but view these moments as a challenge. Positivity attracts positivity – and positive people are generally great to be around.

Have a fantastic Term 2
