I, Jayden Alesich, have now been involved with the school’s radio station and bringing that up to speed and life since 2019. I and Mr Wills alongside Kim from Whitireia (The Radio Training School) have been working on this since February last year. This task has been a long and challenging process with a few mishaps on the journey. However, I am glad to announce that the Massey High radio station is now up live, working and we will start to train the younger students on using it. We plan to host competitions, shows, notices and interviews and much more. We realised the importance of the radio station when we came back to school during level 2, and how we could not hold assemblies due to the limit of people allowed in an area. This is where we tried to work as hard as we could in this period to try and get it working. The introduction of this can allow students to continue their knowledge and passion for behind the scenes work with technology or for new students to expand their pathways and opportunities for their future.

Alongside this I have also been working very closely with the new drama teacher Mrs Chamley with the yearly school production, this year it is High School Musical. We have been having talks sorting out all the technical side of things when it comes to our yearly production. We are now having the students run the sound and lighting equipment rather than hiring outsiders to come do it. This once again is a big opportunity for the younger students to expand their experience and prepare for a possible future in the lighting and sound industry. It also helps reduce the cost of the production and allows for more of the budget to be focused on our students. So in the future we can continue training up the younger students who are interested in these kinds of things to help them get more involved and do what they love.

In July I and a few others are going back to Whitireia in Auckland City to go do a level 4 radio training course following on from our year 12 experience there. Media academy gives us the opportunity to go every Friday out to the city to learn skills at the Radio Training School, from broadcasting, mixing, presenting, writing scripts and much more. So I am definitely looking forward to going back this year and learning more skills to expand my knowledge in this area and then I can feedback my experience and skills to the younger students.
