Mumps in Massey High School

The number of mumps cases in Auckland is continuing to increase. Spread of the disease in the community is established, with cases reported in several schools across Auckland, in addition to Massey High School. Thank you to all students, parents/guardians and staff who have helped to implement control measures within the school.

Mumps outbreaks in schools and tertiary institutions overseas e.g. United States of America have disrupted student learning, and we are concerned that this outbreak might continue for some time.

We urge parents to check with their doctors to ensure MMR vaccinations for their families are up to date during the school holidays and to get vaccinated if required. Vaccination is free and it will protect your child and the community

Spread of infection can be minimised by practising good hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes and disposing of dirty tissues immediately.

During the holidays, keep a close eye on your child for signs of illness such as fever or swollen salivary glands. If your child becomes unwell, keep them at home until they are seen by your family doctor. Your doctor can test for mumps with a viral swab to the inside of their cheek, advise on isolation and any test results, and will notify public health.

If you have any questions please visit the Auckland Regional Public Health Service website on www.arphs.govt.nz or phone 09 623 4600 and speak to the ARPHS Mumps Outbreak Coordinator. Further advice on mumps is available from Healthline 24/7 on 0800 611 116.
