MASSEY HIGH SCHOOL - CARPENTRY ACADEMY 2018

Nick Hackett —

The Carpentry Academy celebrated its 2018 commencement with a BBQ at the MHS site on Friday afternoon February 9th. In attendance were the students, members of the Massey High School senior management team and staff from Mitre 10 MEGA Westgate, one of our key business supporters.

The students were all issued their carpentry uniforms, which included the raincoats that were soon put to good use! Students will be based at the building site Monday to Friday focusing full-time on developing both their hard and soft skills. They will be under the guidance of their building tutor Mr Cameron Fergus. Cameron is well acquainted with Massey High School as he was our property manager before taking on this important role.

There are currently twenty one students starting the course, with the opportunity to gain over ninety NCEA credits, mainly at Level 2 but some at higher levels. Over the year they will secure their Level 2 NCEA which will be endorsed with the Construction and Infrastructure Pathways award and the BCAT’s L2 National Certificate. Ramset, Site Safe and first aid certifications are also included in the course. As with all academy students at Massey High School, each student is entitled to three free driving lessons with our fully qualified driving instructor Mr Price. To take advantage of this opportunity students will need to bring their Learners Licences to Ms Revell near the Attendance Office, then book a time with Mr Price. The lessons are held during school time.

We wish all the team good luck and success with their training in 2018.
