MASSEY HIGH SCHOOL - PATAKA KAI

Sadie van der Kraaij —

You may have noticed our Pataka Kai (Community Pantry) outside the school. This is part of a larger network of Patakas in New Zealand and 10HVK are proud kaitiaki of this particular one. The concept of these pantries is “take what you need, leave what you can”. If you are keen to be involved there are many ways that you can help:

We make daily lunch packs for the pataka – a sandwich, muesli bar and sometimes some fruit. Can you donate a loaf of bread, sandwich spreads, muesli bars, fruit, food bags? If so, please drop them into reception and we will put them to very valuable use. Are you in a position to drop and extra lunch in there every now and again?

Do you have excess fruit or veggies grown in the garden? Do you make your own jams or chutneys? You can place these directly into the pataka or drop them into reception.

Towards the end Term 1 we will be doing a school-wide can drive. Please consider excess cans (any packets) in your cupboards at home or popping an extra few into your weekly shop.

Do you work for a hospitality business who have lots of food wastage? Rather than send this to landfill, box it, label it and pop it into our pataka.

We are also happy to accept pet food, toiletries and stationery donations. Please place these on the lower shelf. There are many ways you can help. We know that there is never a lunch pack left at the end of the day. We know that many primary students also access our pataka. School is hard for many students, but it is even harder if you are hungry.

The Massey High Pataka Kai would like to thank the regular contributions from Bridgestone Tyre Centre Westgate, Columbus Coffee Glen Eden, Darren Gosse, Debbi Ashby, Leslea Wallace, The Andres-Case family and our amazing Kaitiaki and their families.
