SPORT AT MAUNGARAKI SCHOOL

Maungaraki School —

It's been a busy term of sport at Maungaraki school

RIPPA RUGBY

The Maungaraki Ripsters and Hurricanes took part in the South West Zone Rippa Rugby Tournament last week.  It was a fun yet competitive tournament and the students did really well. The Hurricanes did enough to finish first and qualify for the Interzone event.  The Ripsters had a great tournament and after the last game there was a count back of points to see who finished second, but unfortunately the Ripsters were on the wrong side of the count back.  Both teams were complimented on their team work, fair play and sportsmanship by two other schools which was awesome to hear!

The Hurricanes went to Interzone yesterday.  After fierce competition including extra time in the final, we must say a huge CONGRATULATIONS to our Hurricanes team who won the inter-zone competition.  The team had an awesome day and showed great team spirit throughout the tournament.  Special thanks to Newton, Nia and Niko for coaching the teams at the tournaments and to all the parents and supporters who cheered the teams on.

CRICKET

After qualifying for the semi final of the Year 5/6 Wellington Cricket Tournament by beating Wellesley and Waterloo (by default), the boys came up against Kilbirnie at Kilbirnie Park.  After setting an imposing 104 off their 16 overs, the game was unfortunately taken away from us by one exceptional player who scored 65 in the run chase.  Commiserations to the boys but they should be super proud of their achievements and the way they conducted themselves on and off the field! Bring on next year! Many thanks to Eric Turner for coaching the team, Mr C for organising everything and all the parents who supported us.

TOUCH RUGBY ROUNDUP

We had 9 teams entered in the competition this term.  We really appreciated all of the coaches and managers who gave up their time to make it possible for our students to play.  A huge thank you to all of you.  Here are the final results for each team:

Year 1/2 Maungaraki Metros

The Metros won a dramatic Division 2 C final against the Korokoro Thunder. Joseph Sarginson, Jacob Vega-Grant and Gus Counsell had some excellent ball carries. With the fulltime score locked at 2-2, the game went into extra time. Only 3 players from each team were allowed on the field. The first team to score would be declared winners. On the 6th Touch of our first possession, Rio King ran to the open space on the right and made a nice to pass to Joseph Sarginson who dived in the corner to score the game winner.
Most Valuable Player: Joseph Sarginson
Rookie of the season: Xavier Knox

Year 3/4 Maungaraki Magnetic

The Magnetic had a great touch season this term which culminated in them taking out the Year 3/4 Division 1 Mixed Grade. It was great seeing the team improve each week.
Most Valuable Player: Sam Leonard
Rookie of the season: Maddison Munroe

Year 3/4 Maungaraki Mysterious

It was a fast paced B final with the final score 13 -3 to the opposition. It was great to see our kids playing with such skill and enthusiasm, they have improved a lot over the season. Well done team on a fantastic season.
Most Valuable Player - Xavier Voller
Rookie of the season - Mackenzie Gwerder

Year 5/6 Maungaraki Majestic

Wow - what a way to end the season! We drew 2 tries all at full time against a very good Gracefield team, and only just got pipped in extra time. But what a game it was. Amazing defence (which we now pride ourselves on), some great runs & exceptional ball skills to score 2 tries, and a whole lot of heart after a very intense and tight game. This season has been testing on the girls confidence levels and there was plenty of tears, frustration & heartbreak. BUT they showed grit, determination, talent & resilience. The improvement from Week 1 to 6 was huge, and for that, they should all be so incredibly proud.
Most Valuable Player - Samantha Knox
Rookie of the season - Greta Savage

Yr 5/6 Maungaraki Magic

It was a hard fought game for 3rd & 4th place with the game going down to a golden try three aside game. Waterloo managed to score first and won the game. Great season by the boys!
Most Valuable Player - Jake Turner
Rookie of the season - Jirakiat Srisakot

Year 5/6 Maungaraki Matrix

The Matrix narrowly lost the Division 3 A Final to a well organised Gracefield Tiger side 5-3. The halftime score was 2-2. The team’s effort was outstanding, with lots of positive takeaways we can build on for next season.
Most Valuable Player - Cooper Burt
Rookie of the season - Jed Leonard

Year 7/8 Maungaraki Mustangs

The Maungaraki Mustangs had a great season and finished on a high taking out the Division 2 Mixed grade winning the final 5-1 against Our Lady of the Rosary.
Most Valuable Player - Noah Pakai
Rookie of the season - Eli Church

Year 7/8 Maungaraki Madness

Maungaraki Mustangs won their last game of the season to come 3rd in the division. It was an awesome to see the team work together and play as a team and it was a well deserved result. Special mention goes to the girls in the team who all improved massively this season which made giving out the awards very difficult.
Most Valuable Player - Jake Sarginson
Rookie of the season - Emma Berry
