SPORTS WRAP 2019

It's been a huge year of sport at Maungaraki School! We've had huge numbers representing Maungaraki in touch, basketball, and netball, and record numbers attending zone events, notably the 7 athletes who qualified for Regional Athletics. We've established great relationships with local schools and have been involved in some very successful football and netball exchanges with their Year 5-8 teams. We hope to continue these and establish further connections in 2020.

Some highlights of the year include our Year 5/6 cricket team making the semi finals in the Primary Schools Cricket tournament in Term 1, our Year 5/6 Rippa team winning the Wellington Regional Qualifier competition and subsequently earning the right to represent Wellington (and Argentina) at the National Rippa tournament held in Wellington in August, and the sports teams that won their respective grades in basketball, netball, and touch! Further highlights include the Sports Academy having theory and practical sessions with the entire Wellington Lions squad and having a Q & A session with Hamish Bennett and Logan van Beek of the Wellington Firebirds!

I'd like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who supports sport at Maungaraki School - all of our students, coaches, teachers, staff, and supporters. Our teams and the events we attend wouldn't be possible without your support, so all the help we receive is very much appreciated. Thank you again, and we are looking forward to another fantastic year in 2020!

A note looking forward to 2020... the sport structure will look a little different. Because our school is continuously growing and it's such an important part of life at Maungaraki, we are putting more resources into the running of our PE programmes and sports organisation. Alle Pollard-Smith will be the PE and Health Curriculum Leader and in charge of the running of sport internally, and Chris Cowman will be the Sports Coordinator and in charge of sports teams.

SPORTS ACADEMY 2020

The Sports Academy will be running again in 2020 for Years 5-8 students who are keen sportspeople wanting to extend their knowledge and skills in this area. Our focus in this group is more about a deeper involvement in and understanding of sport.

Any students wanting to join the Sports Academy for 2020 should email a personal sports profile to Mr Cowman and Mrs Pollard-Smith. This could include previous sporting experience and achievements, reasons why you have a passion for sport, favourite sports, and what you would like to get out of being a member of the academy.

For 2019 Sports Academy students, if you are not keen to continue, please let us know via email, otherwise you do not need to reapply and we will include you in the 2020 group. We'd love to have you back!

So if you are a current Year 4-7 student and you want to join the Sports Academy for 2020 - email a personal sports profile to Mr Cowman and Mrs Pollard-Smith by Friday 13th February.
