Term 1

FIRE SAFETY

This week we have been lucky enough to have a group of Firefighters visit the Kākano team. They have been working with students on what it means to be FireWise. Students will have plenty to share with you around this, and should have some homework for you to do as a family. Have you created a fire exit plan yet?

Free Home Fire Safety visits are also offered.  Families that qualify will receive a free long life smoke alarm and all families can request a free home fire safety check at home. There is also enclosed the Fire Awareness Poster for young people who have used fire in an inappropriate way.

WELCOME NEW DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

We are pleased to welcome Brigitte Ferguson to our staff, who will be joining our team as a Deputy Principal from Term 2.

Brigitte brings a wealth of teaching experience and has been a Team Leader at Fergusson Intermediate for the last five years. She has an impressive CV and brings strengths in the area of EOTC, Te Reo and Science. Brigitte will bring with her an in depth knowledge of intermediate schools which we see as a real benefit as we embark on the next chapter of our strategic plan at Maungaraki School.

A few other elements Brigitte brings that also stood out to us were:

  • Writing and implementing Individual Education Plans
  • Experience with ORS students
  • Sport leadership
  • Literacy leadership
  • Coaching and mentoring experience
  • Assessment and reporting leadership

We can't wait to welcome her to the Maungaraki team.

STAFF CHANGES

This week we say a farewell for now to our wonderful Junior Team Leader Trish Cherry. Trish will be welcoming a new member to her whānau very soon. We are so excited for this and can not wait to meet her new arrival.

Trish is expecting to be back with the team in Term 4. Jen Long will be leading the Kākano team for the next two terms. If you need to contact her she can be reached at jennifer.long@maungaraki.school.nz

SUPPORT

Our community has really come together to show it's amazing spirit, particularly in these trying times. With covid now well and truly here it is more important than ever than we continue to look after each other. Our school values focus on relationships and teamwork, these are so evident as we all need a little help navigating the issues covid puts in front of us.

We currently have support in the form of food parcels available for members of the community. If for any reason you or someone you know would benefit from some additional kai at this time please contact myself or Mike at Benedict's. As a school we are also here for you. Please do reach out and speak to us if you need anything at all. Thank you for all you have done to support us as a school.
