Maungaraki School —

Term 3

We've been so fortunate that HVBA have managed to get the Term 3 season back underway! Teams have 3 games post-lockdown, so week 10 is the last game of the season.  Once the season ends please drop your basketball singlets off to Mrs Pollard-Smith or in to the office.

Good luck to all of the teams, you guys are amazing!  Here are some updates:

Maungaraki Hornets Yr 3/4
The team is going well with both Minh and Mikaere receiving the Player of the Day award recently. Most recently, the coach said "Good to be back to games this week. We scored 5 baskets, Minh scored 2, Mikaere scored 2 and Jordan scored 1. Player of the day was Mishika who was constantly in the game, defending and had some good passes.
Our last game on Monday Ruby and Alex both got players of the day.  Hunter, Ruby and Mikaere all scored and everyone played very well.

Maungaraki Mavericks Yr 5/6
Prior to lockdown: we got off to a great start in our first game with a good win (24-0) over Muritai Long shots. But our second game was much more of a challenge, which we lost 6-16 against a sharp EHS Celtics teams. Last night we played against Waterloo Thunder – we really dominated to the rebounds, which provided us with a lot of offensive opportunities. Our shooting was a bit rushed in the first half, but after slowing things down we managed to get a few good buckets, coming away with the win by 8-2.

Maungaraki Warriors Yr 5/6
Had a tough loss prior to lockdown, but Zac took away Play of the Day for his awesome work at doing what the coach asked of him so well. The following week the Player of the Game was Mackenzie for her excellent effort throughout the game, always finding ways to stay involved and not standing back and watching. Really going to getting the game rather than waiting for it to come to her. In the first game back from lockdown, Player of the day went to Sophie. She made a number of very clutch plays in those final 5 minutes which swung the game, allowing us to score the points needed. She was followed super closely by Koko. It was actually one of the best games I’ve seen from Koko, her tenacity on defence a real feature. She even got a number of shots up which she hasn’t managed in other games. I’m also really appreciating her enthusiasm to practise. She might be small but she is proving to be a real leader in this regard.
