HEART VALUES CORNER

EMBRACING BEING ACTIVE EVEN IN WINTER

Hello Maungaraki families and students! In this edition of our HEART Values section, we're diving into the importance of being active, especially during the winter months. Our HEART value of "Active" encourages us all to stay physically and mentally engaged, even when the weather gets chilly.*

Why Being Active Matters:

1. Physical Health: Engaging in physical activities helps children build strong bones and muscles and improve cardiovascular health. It also enhances flexibility, coordination, and overall motor skills.

2. Mental Health: Regular physical activity releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. It reduces stress, anxiety, and feelings of depression, fostering a positive outlook on life.

3. Social Interaction: Participating in group activities or sports encourages teamwork, communication, and collaboration. It's a wonderful way for children to make new friends and strengthen existing relationships.

4. Cognitive Benefits: Being active has a direct impact on cognitive function. It improves attention span, memory, and problem-solving skills. An active lifestyle has even been linked to higher academic achievement.

Having an active mind is also a key factor in this value. Being active doesn't just mean moving our bodies; it also involves keeping our minds engaged. Here's how an active mind benefits children:

1. Improved Focus: Regular physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, promoting better focus and concentration. Children who are active tend to have a longer attention span in and out of the classroom.

2. Enhanced Creativity: Being active stimulates the brain and encourages creative thinking. Activities like drawing, writing, or experimenting with crafts can help children express themselves in unique ways.

3. Critical Thinking: Problem-solving activities, puzzles, and strategy games are excellent ways to keep young minds active. These challenges promote cognitive development and help children become better at analyzing and solving problems.

4. Curiosity and Learning: An active mind is curious and eager to learn. Encourage your child to explore new interests, read books, or engage in educational games that spark their curiosity.

Remember, the key is to keep moving and keep learning, no matter the weather outside. Let's embrace the "Active" HEART value and make this winter a season of growth and discovery for our students.

Stay warm and active, Maungaraki family!
