Maungaraki School —

Games 4 & 5

GAME 4

Maungaraki Heat: The Heat had a great win today 10-2. Everyone was passing giving everyone a turn with runs and shots and leading to some great goals from team work. The player of the day went to Sam Vega Grant.

Maungaraki Thunder: The team played so well together last week - passing around to each other and making sure everyone got a turn having the ball. POTD was Jordan Rapana.

Maungaraki Knicks: Monday's POTD were Ollie and Noah, for great defence against a tough team.

Maungaraki Hornets: Very proud of the team today with a loss of 12-8 against Hutt central lakers. The kids are going from strength to strength with their confidence, with Mia, Millie and Mackenzie scoring the buckets for our team. POTD went to the whole team, as they really worked together as a unit and the individual skill sets on show were fabulous. From the point scorers to their confidence bringing the ball up the court, to their defence! Well done team :)

Maungaraki Spurs: we came up against another tough team this week, with the usual much taller opposition year 4’s making life challenging for us. The scores were even most of the way through the first half, but we let them off with a few easy points early in the second. However we showed incredible resilience to fight back to level the scores, and almost won it with a few shots that just wouldn’t quite sink in the dying seconds. We finished at 14-14 at full time. Players of the day were Connor Caarels, who has been going from strength to strength with each game, and Issac Popple-Newth, who showed some great hustle in his first game back for us.

Maungaraki Mavericks: Tough game last night with 3 players out sick so no subs and we still played really well going down 14-2 to Belmont. The score got away a bit as the team got tired. Player of the day was Carlo who shot and passed really well and defended super well for the whole game.

Maungaraki Ballers: BYE

Maungaraki Timberwolves: after a strong start and some amazing defence in the first quarter, we really let our foot off the pedal in this game, giving up a lot of points in the second and third quarters. We made a bit of a fight back in the fourth to get a few points on the board, but overall it was a bit of a tough day at the office for the Timberwolves this week. Final score was 10-38. Players of the day were Khaylan Magner, who is now starting to show some great attacking skills, and Ethan Jooste, who works incredibly hard all game and but for an unfavourable roll of the ball would have been rewarded with his first bucket.

GAME 5

Thunder: The Thunder played a great game on Friday and came away with two POTD's! Congratulations and well done to Daniel Le Roux and Harry Faulkner!

Heat: Maungaraki Heat managed to keep their unbeaten record, but were pushed by Hutt Central to the very end winning by 2 goals in a thrilling & nail-biting game. The Heat are really good at hands over the ball & getting the ball back. Liam was POTD and kept going after the ball & gave 100%. In the final minute he scored our last basket with a swoosh!

Hornets: Tough going last night. A loss of 14-2 for the girls - the positives were that the girls kept going, playing their game.... they were fantastic representatives for the school!!! Also the girls are loving showing their leadership skill as we rotate the captaincy each week. POD went to Mackenzie this week for a couple of blocked shots as well as her bucket. Nice job!

Spurs: We played against Korokoro Eagles, and put in what can only be described as a complete team performance, with every single player making an outstanding effort across all aspects of the game. We spent a lot of time on attack, and showed an ability to pass to players in space and gather our rebounds, not to mention nailing some difficult shots. On defence each player was always marking up and working hard to shut down their player or turn the ball over. The final score was 16-4 to us. In all honesty the player of the day could have gone to anyone, but this week we went with Kenan Tibbott – he has really grown in confidence over the last few games, and in this game was defending hard, getting steals and even having a go at putting up shots.

Knicks: Players of the day this week were Sophie and Henry. Henry was awesome on defence and Sophie shot some amazing goals. Great job you two!

Ballers: POTD was Alex Briscoe - awesome work Alex, keep it up!

Timberwolves: We had another tough game for the year 7/8 Maungaraki Timberwolves last night, coming up against a strong Avalon side. It was a much improved effort by our team over last week though. We held Avalon scoreless in one quarter, and beat them on the scoreboard in another, but in the end the pace of the game overwhelmed us and we eventually went down by 10-27. Players of the day were Tushar, who showed great speed and set up some good attacking opportunities, and Denzel, who consistently works incredibly hard on both attack and defence and played another great game last night.
