BASKETBALL

Alle Pollard-Smith —

Game 1 & 2

The Term 2 basketball season is underway and it has been an exciting one so far! Here's an update from some of the teams on their Week 1 and Week 2 games:

Heat (Yr 1/2)
What an amazing first game, we won 4 - 2. Brody scored both the goals and was amazing along with Josh and every other member of the team. Player of the game was Dominique for listening and dribbling the ball super well.

Maungaraki Knicks (Yr 3/4)
Game 1: The team played their first game against Waterloo Hoopers. We had 3 players away so it was going to be tough. The Knicks showed good passing & defence & went on to win the game 8-6. A very exciting close first game. Our player of the day was Tom Dutton.
Game 2: Mon 10th May - The Maungaraki Knicks played Waterloo Hoopers again in their 2nd week. Hoopers started strong scoring the first two points. Maungaraki Knicks hustled for the ball & managed to score points. Another close match with the Knicks winning 8-4. Player of the match was Josh Papps.

Maungaraki Hornets (Yr 3/4)
Game 1: The team played well, lots of enthusiasm from them all. A few first time players but they clicked on quickly. Final score was 16-8 to Korokoro.
Game 2: The team played really well and won 6-4. Jordan scored 2 and Mikaere 1. Player of the day was hard, but it goes to Jordan who scored all our points last week and 4 this week. Ruby deserves a mention for her great marking of her colour and Mikaere for taking over possession of the ball many times.

Maungaraki Mavericks (Year 5/6)
The Week 2 game was a tough one for the Mavericks. Our player of the day was Ollie Dutton, who put in a huge effort around the court on both attack and defence. On to the next game!

Maungaraki Warriors (Year 5/6)
Game 1: We had an exciting draw against the Fernlea Breakers. It was 6 all. We had many extra shots and all those extra shots were a direct result of our great defence, particularly in the second half. Plenty of steals and intercepts from everyone. Great listening and adapting on the go so quickly was a real plus that I hadn’t expected.

They all played great and were well led by our experienced trio of Mackenzie, Koko and Sophie. It was fantastic to see Tom, Tim and Xavier all get stuck in and they looked right at home on court. Lots of red faces at the end which showed just how hard they had all worked.

Player of the day went to Tim. He really got stuck in and had a high level of intensity. Was awesome to see for someone who hadn’t played before.

Game 2: A big congrats to us today. We won our first competition game 10 – 8 against the Fernlea Breakers. It was a really encouraging game. I saw the teamwork really starting to develop and we were looking for each other to pass to a lot more. They are all listening and doing what I ask of them.

Tom was the player of the day today. He was just popping up every where the ball was which is great positional play. He was open a lot on offence, we just need to get those passes a bit more accurate and stronger.

Timberwolves (Yr 7/8)
Game 1: Although we lost the game 40 - 20, that wasn’t a true reflection of how the team played. They were amazing and listened, and played really well as a team. Player of the game was Mia Burt – it was her first game of Basketball and she listened and then actioned that on court.

Game 2: The team played very well last night! Player of the Day went to Rhys for his defence and listening.

All Players of the Day earn 50 points for their House for showing the Active and Teamwork school values - keep up the great work!
