Maungaraki School —

Term 3

AIMS GAMES

In week eight I had the amazing experience where I was able to represent Maungaraki in the Anchor Aims Games held in Tauranga.  In representing Maungaraki I decided to go up for the thing I love the most, Mountain biking.  I felt like I fitted in really well, mainly because there were so many others who have the same passion as me so I felt right at home.  Before the race I was very nervous ,I got stuck at the briefing with others so when we all got over there I was in one of the worst starting positions that there was. When the gun went off I was knocked off my bike and had to try and pull back so much time on all the others. I managed to get through some of the slow people but I was still far behind the leading person. I managed to slowly make my way up over the course of two laps and right at the end I was cut off and was only able to achieve fifth over seventy fifth.  I definitely feel that I will be doing it again. Liam Brown

Well done Liam, thanks for representing us so well and congratulations on coming 5th at your first Aims Games.

INTERZONE SWIMMING

On 6 September Maungaraki had 8 students competing at the Interzone Swimming event at Huia Pool. Congratulations to Olivia Turner, Jake Turner, Sheldyne Ronquest, Jake Sarginson, Aidan Meehan, Lara Fiddis, Jack Rowley, and Alison Zondervan for their awesome efforts. All of our swimmers did an amazing job and represented the school with pride and enthusiasm.

Olivia Turner came 3rd in the Year 4 girls 25m freestyle and 1st in the Year 4 girls 25m backstroke, Jake Turner came 4th in the Year 750m freestyle and 3rd in the 50m backstroke.  And our Year 7/8 boys medley relay team came 3rd place. Great effort!

Thank you to Mr C and Lisa Turner for supervising the team on the day, and to all parents who went down to support.

BASKETBALL

Game 6

After the round robin the Maungaraki Spurs finished just outside the top four, in 5th place. We played off in our “semi-final”, against the 8th place Korokoro Eagles and came away with the win by 10-4. It was great to see so many of our players really growing in confidence, with many that aren’t our usual ball movers dribbling the length of the court and putting up shots. Players of the day went to Zach, who always puts in a ton of work behind the scenes to help win the ball and set up attacking plays, and Leo, whose strong attack today helped give us some comfort on the scoreboard in the second half.

POTD - Games 6 and 7

The basketball season is wrapping up and it is finals week! Good luck to all teams in their last games, and to the Maungaraki Ballers who are playing off for 1st and 2nd in the Year 5/6 A grade.

Game 7

Hornets - Great last game to end the season - we finished 8th in the grade going down to Naenae 16-2. Millie was our POD this game - she was present, determined and ran the whole game. Nice work Millie!!! I am super proud of how far the girls have come with their skills and determination! They have all made strides within their gameplay this year and I hope they all play again next year! Thanks heaps to Cole for managing the team and giving his lunchtimes on Monday’s to help train the team. Also massive shout out to Tina for taking on the score bench for the team every week - thanks so much!!

Year 5/6: Our POD Lachlan played hard today and was determined to help his team mates have a good game and good outcome. On defence he hustles the player with the ball trying to force a turnover or block the shot. On attack he's not afraid to shoot but is also selfless by passing the ball to his team mates to get them closer to the goal. Liking your game, Lachlan :)

Year 1/2: Sanchit's was POD, his confidence grows each week. He's learning the game and enjoying his opportunities on the court. He is especially really good at defending the other team by putting his arms high and up over the ball to stop the other team from shooting. He also collected a good rebound off the hoop which he use to be hesitant about doing before.

Maungaraki Spurs: It was our last game of the season for the Spurs, and we played off for 5th and 6th place in our grade, against Belmont Stars. It was very close the whole way through, but the combination of some great on-court vision and great shooting gave us a 2-point buffer right at the end which we managed to hold on to. The final score was 8-6 to us. Overall it has been a tougher term 3 for the Spurs, playing against some stronger teams of mostly year 4’s. Despite this we put together some amazing games and finished in a respectable 5th place in a tough grade. All our players have shown tremendous improvement, and there are definitely some good prospects for the future amongst this year group, so we are looking forward to doing it all again next year!

Maungaraki Timberwolves: We had a challenging game this week against the HIBS Buccaneers, as with a few players out sick we were down to only one sub. We managed to hold strong through the first two quarters, and were only a few points down at the half-time break. But the challenge of keeping fresh legs on the court got the better of us and the score blew out in the last two quarters – we eventually went down by 10-33.

The basketball season is wrapping up and it is finals week! Good luck to all teams in their last games, and to the Maungaraki Ballers who are playing off for 1st and 2nd in the Year 5/6 A grade

Thank you so much for another amazing season. Huge congratulations to all players and a massive thank you to coaches, parents, and supporters - these things can't happen without your support so it is greatly appreciated!

SPORTS EXCHANGE

Last week we hosted St's Peter and Paul in a friendly football and netball exchange. The students played in two incredibly hard-fought games. The Year 5/6 A netball team worked really hard on defence and put some great passes together, but unfortunately shooting accuracy was the difference and St's Peter and Paul took that one out. In football, it was a very close game with Maungaraki coming away with a 1-0 win. The goal was scored by Jed Leonard, and Clay Wills made some excellent saves to keep the opposition out.  Awesome effort everyone! A huge thanks to John Leonard for taking the team and running trainings for the players.
