PRINCIPALS MESSAGE

Shane Robinson —

A difficult week in New Zealand

Kia ora whānau,

It has been a difficult week in New Zealand.  Again we wish to express our heartfelt sympathies to all those affected by the tragic events in Christchurch.  We encourage any families to please contact us if there is any further support we can provide for you and your children. If you have a particular concern about your child, please email your child’s teacher or Syndicate Leader.

When tragedies like this happen, some of our children will inevitably be asking questions.  Below is some advice for supporting children through traumatic events which maybe helpful for you, this has also been given to our teachers.

Some further advice from Dr Sarb Johal, a Clinical Psychologist (which will be dependent on the age of the child):
- Give children as much information as they ask for.
- Stay aware of things they might see or hear in the media and when in adult company
- Tell children they're safe and that people are helping keep them safe.
- Don't shy away from telling them people have been hurt and killed.
- Remember to talk about feelings as much as facts.
- Find a space to process their own feelings, if they're struggling they should get help.
- Understand teenagers will want to be with their peers and parents should encourage that.
- Remember children and teenagers' reactions may be delayed.
- Let children help; find avenues where they can contribute..

We do have some families at our school who are part of the Muslim community.  We will continue to reach out to look for ways to support our families through this time and our thoughts are with them.

Should anyone want to come and see me please do not hesitate, my door is always open.

Nga Mihi Nui,
Shane Robinson
