HĀNGĪ

Maungaraki School —

A great experience for our families

What an amazing day we had on Friday! From the first arrivals at 5am, to the last to leave after clean up at 5:30pm.  And it started before that.....

Last year Mia Brown and Allie Knox had a nugget of an idea, they did their research and gathered resources. This year the mantle was passed to the Enviro Team. They spread the word that we needed some experts to help us on our Hāngī journey.  Lucky for us we had some amazing people supporting it along the way.

The next step was finding donations. New World Metro came through with all of our vegetables, the Neelam Dariy donated our breakfast and there were so many others.  And then there were the people!

Our community really shone with their support. We had helpers preparing on Thursday, putting the Hāngī down on Friday, digging it up, and when things didn't go quite to plan, offering their ovens so we could serve at 3pm.

Last but not least, our tamariki. They scrunched paper, wrote about what might be hiding in the hole, peeled potatoes, swept floors, cooked toast, sung waiata, and to finish it all off ate some delicious kai.

Then, when the dust was settled, and the pit was refilled, it was time to go home.

There have since been stories of pumpkin soup and pumpkin pie from left overs, first tastes of Hāngī, and singing around the fire. We are so very grateful for all the people who contributed to make this Hāngī such an amazing experience for our tamariki.

A special thanks to John, Alex, Wiremu, Aranui and Andre who did alot of the hard labour in putting the Hāngī in the ground. You showed our tamariki so much more about how a Hāngī is made then we could ever do learning this in a classroom.

Thank you. "He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata. What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people."

We would like to gratefully thank the following businesses for their generous support of our school Hāngī.
