WAIHANGA CENTRE

Maungaraki School —

New Learning Space

Maungaraki School's latest learning space, The Waihanga Centre, is now open for business! This creativity centre aims to provide rich technology opportunities for students and a chance to bring what they're learning in class to life through the design process. This centre is aimed mostly at the senior syndicate, but there will be opportunities for our younger tamariki to explore the spaces too. We have already begun trialing the spaces with a small group of students and will shortly be launching a weekly programme for the senior syndicates.

THE SPACES

The main centre is located in Room 8 and is comprised of three main areas:

The Digital Technology Space

This space will be used to develop digital technology skills including coding, design software, and bringing creations to life using our 3D printer.

The Food Technology Space

This compact kitchen space will be used by small groups to develop cooking & baking skills and to deepen knowledge of nutrition.

The Flexi Space

This part of the centre is made up of flexible furniture with whiteboard surfaces where students can collaboratively solve problems and design challenges that tie into the Technology curriculum. It also contains a large touch-screen computer so students can explore content and test their creations in a more interactive way with others.

Build 'n' Play Shed

This space, just over from the main Waihanga Centre, is where students can develop their hard-tech skills and bring ideas to life with carpentry tools and materials.

THE PROGRAMME

Koru & Fern

Each class in the senior syndicates will have a session in the Waihanga Centre every week. Within these sessions, students will have opportunities to complete challenges in each of the technology spaces. Senior students will also have access to the spaces on Wednesdays and Thursdays to support and enhance their in-class learning.

Kākano & Tipu

The space will be available at certain times each week for junior classrooms to use and enhance their classroom programme. We are really excited about these new spaces and can't wait to share more with you about the students' successes as the year goes on!
