BOARD TALK - DECEMBER 2020

Maungaraki School —

Board of Trustees

Kia ora koutou katoa.

We want to thank the many people who have supported and led our school through this highly disruptive year. Shane and all our staff have done an incredible job overcoming the challenges of lockdown and offering our children plenty of opportunities to shine and do their best. We also appreciate the many hours and donations families have given to the school, knowing it has not been an easy year for many of us.

You might remember at the start of the year we adopted our new Charter, after receiving your feedback on the school’s vision and values. One of the strategic aims we set for this year was to provide a supportive environment which fosters wellbeing for all our students, community and staff. This has proved to be so important and we are pleased to see our school develop a culture of care and wellbeing. The HEART values are well and truly being lived and led in every classroom.

At our December board meeting we discussed our students’ progress in reading, writing and mathematics in 2020. While acknowledging every student’s situation is different, the results overall are pleasing, with the school meeting targets of 90% of students making expected or accelerated progress. What is even more impressive is this was achieved in a year with two months of online teaching and everyone adapting to new ways of learning. We have a lot to look forward to next year!

Our budget has been confirmed and the school is in a good financial position to handle the unexpected. Our intermediate continues to grow stronger after a successful refresh this year. We have a full complement of passionate and caring staff. There will be a new adventure playground in Term 1 and other property plans are in the works to provide for our growing role.We do hope everyone has a relaxing break and look forward to seeing you again next year. If there is anything you would like to discuss or you would simply like to learn more about the governance of the school, please see the Board of Trustees section of the school website or contact us for details.
