What is a SENCO?
"One of my roles at Mayfield School is Special Education Needs Co-ordinator or (SENCO). I am often asked, what does a SENCO do?"
SENCo stands for Special Educational Needs Coordinator.
My role co-ordinates all the stakeholders including teachers, whānau and outside agencies to develop appropriate support for students with a range of diverse needs where necessary.
Coordination might be (Intervention Plans) transition to school plans, and safety plans, created. A SENCO also makes referrals to RTLB (Resource Teacher of Learning and Behaviour) and MOE Learning Support. We also have most ESOL students who work with a teacher aide 2 to 3 times a week on our Learning Village program.
As classroom teachers at Mayfield School, we compile a termly Learning Support Register which lists children as either At, Teacher Monitoring, Intervention Required, Intense Intervention Required, or Above. This highlights for us children who may need additional support with their learning. This determines how we use our teacher aides and school-wide programs like additional structured literacy.
Classroom teachers do a great job at catering to the students in their classroom.
Our school also had a Learning Support Co-ordinator (LSC) who visits us each week. Her name is Jackie. Jackie tends to support those students in Years 5-8, and myself in Year 1-4.
If you have any concerns about your child's learning please contact your child's classroom teacher in the first instance.
Thanks
