Community is what we create together
Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) was in the last week of September, which was during our school holidays. The theme this year focused on community as a key factor in supporting people’s wellbeing.
Feeling connected with others is strongly associated with better wellbeing by giving us a sense of meaning, safety, support and purpose. This newsletter shares the ways MHAW encourages people to define, build and celebrate community. I encourage you to share these ideas with your child so that they can understand the importance of building connections and communities, and how they can be a part of this - just like they are a part of the Medbury community!
Manaaki (extending respect and hospitality to others): Carry out acts of kindness by helping others in small but meaningful ways such as opening a door or helping someone if they drop something. One small act can create a chain of acts of kindness which can uplift and build a community.
Tautoko (to support): Support a local business, community group or team by making a small purchase, recommending them to a friend or volunteering your time to help them.
Whānau (family or community of related families): Connect with a family member or friend you have not been in touch with for a while. You might like to make time to meet, talk over the phone or video call to share what you have been doing recently.
Tūhono (link or connect): Make an effort to connect with someone you do not usually talk to, like someone at your school or a neighbour. This helps to create a support network.
Whakawhetai (to give thanks, to be grateful): Take a moment to say thank you to someone, such as the checkout operator at the supermarket, a bus driver, teacher, family member, friend or anyone who helps to make your community what it is.
I hope that this helps you to discuss the concepts of connection and community with your child. I would encourage you to visit the MHAW website for further information.
