The significance of simple words and small gestures

Jenelle Hooson —

As we start to reflect on the year that has been, here is a reminder that as parents it is simple words and comments, rather than grand actions, that often have the most significant impact for our children.

Below are some phrases and comments that will help your child to develop a sense of belonging, trust, confidence and emotional resilience. Please use these, and make them your own, as you consider the conversations you have with your child.

The key element to all of these comments and phrases is that they are not making a judgement about your child, rather they focus on empowering your child to feel heard, acknowledged and significant just as they are.

  • I love seeing your smile

  • I know that this is hard; I am here for you

  • I really liked your kindness today

  • I love being your parent/caregiver

  • You can always come to me and talk and I will listen, no matter what

  • Your best is enough

  • Let’s make some time to do something together

  • I believe in you

  • It’s okay to feel frustrated; we all feel frustrated sometimes

  • I am so grateful to have you in my family

  • I know things did not go how you wanted them to; when you are ready let’s talk about what you can learn from this experience

  • I am sorry that I got that wrong; next time I will aim to listen to you better

  • Just be you; that’s enough
