Learning in Mahuta

Peri Marks —

With writing continuing to be a focus in Mahuta, we will continue to celebrate pieces of writing from our students.

On Monday the 12th of June, Mrs Mac's Inquiry Group headed off to the Christchurch Art Gallery in search of answers to their big questions - 'What is Art and why is it important to our developing culture?"

The following is a sample of their responses after some 'juicy' discussions upon returning to school..Art is -"Expressing yourself using objects in a specific manner.""Not for hiding but for sharing!""No wrong, no right, just is...""A different way of talking to someone and sending a message to everyone about what is important to you.""...draws us in, makes a connection...""Makes us feel things."Art is important to our developing culture because it -- tells the hard stories that words sometimes can't- helps people express emotions like grief and then heal after things like war and earthquakes- reminds us of our history and where we have been- records the stories of our cultures and religions- helps expand our imaginations and our ideas of what beauty isMrs Mac thinks these kids have really captured just what ART is all about with these articulately expressed opinions and ideas. Ka mau te wehi!

Writing Gems

At the Association Mr Frank Johnson the best sweet talker in the world sits in his office thinking of another dirty lie but instead he thought out of the box as he looked at his case and saw a unknown file - it stated the dead note. Frank clicked ahead, it was the most latest murder, it was the murder of Mary Williams. That was the final case to be done, he went to the special law management and then went to court. An unknown man entered the room, Frank knew he was gonna say another dirty lie just to defend the unknown man from Mary's grandmother. But Mary’s grandmother knew she got abused by a man named joey and she thinks it's him. Frank said his name was Michael, but thats my sons name says Mary’s grandmother.  Jakim

I look at my plate and sigh. Oooh, I say in my head, little green balls, I hate them, orange sticks - gross, only rabbits eat them. There's Lilly (my dog). Woof, woof. You look hungry, Mum will never find out. Caitlin

The clouds turned dark. The whistling wind blew harder which tried to slow me down.

As I trudged my way to school I felt the freezing cold air running down my spine, at last I reached my icy destination.

Alesha fearfully ran back to her dad, tears streaming unhappily down her face, she hugged her dad, very tightly. Her new uniform was stained with wet tears, and she longed to go home. Her dad looked at her uncertainly wondering what on earth was wrong. Slowly he pulled his arms away from her, and stepped back. Love filled his heart and he smiled at the little girl. He looked at his workclothes.
