Students in Years 7/8 create their own 'Geometrocity'
Over the past few weeks, students in Years 7/8 have been brushing up their geometry skills and learning about the real world problems involved in designing and constructing a city.
Students in Years 7/8 have spent two weeks designing and creating their own city. Working in groups of 2 - 4, students were responsible for a different city district; districts included the CBD, suburbs, industrial park, public works, park district, tourist attractions and entertainment centres.
After reviewing prior knowledge and learning new geometric terms, students had to pass a mapping 'test' in order to gain a building permit. Next, it was time to plan our city districts in 2D. Building up was the fun part; we created 3D buildings of all shapes and sizes. Finally, we assessed our own and others' districts and voted for the most attractive and desirable city features, solid constructions and appropriate layouts.
Since completing our cities, students have reinforced and built upon their understanding of geometric terms through guided maths lessons exploring reflective and rotational symmetry, enlargements and reductions, translations and tessellations. What a fun start to the mathematical year!
