Term 1, Week 10

Nicky Hebberd —

We are flying through the weeks now. Only 2 more weeks until the holidays.

Kia ora Whānau,

Well done to all of the students who completed the Cross Country. It was a warm day in the end and all of the students should be very proud of themselves.

Our Learning

Reading - We have introduced the comprehension strategy of inference. This is quite a complex concept to explore but we have approached it through visual images and small pieces of texts. We have also been using a graphic organiser to break down our thinking when inferring. The focus is on the question, then what the text says, then the reader's own personal knowledge, these elements support us in our answers. We will continue to concentrate on this strategy for another few weeks and introduce more complex texts to consolidate this strategy.

Please ensure that your child is reading for 20 minutes per day, some of which needs to be to an adult.

Writing - Over the last two weeks we have been learning how to write an information report. We will continue this genre of writing until the end of term. Over the next two weeks we will be learning about ANZAC Day and writing an information report about it. It would be great to start having some conversations at home about ANZAC Day and what it means to you.

Maths - Students in Miss Hebberd's Maths Group have been learning about shapes and we will be looking at 3D shapes next week. To support their learning, these students can be doing Geometry on their IXL.

Students in Ms Gallagher's Maths Group are continuing to work on subtraction of ones, tens and hundreds using regrouping. To support their learning, these students can be doing subtraction on their IXL.

Students in Miss Mansfield's Maths Group are also working on subtraction using regrouping but up to 4 digits. To support their learning, students can be doing subtraction on their IXL.

Digital Citizenship - This week we learned about how to find websites that are good for your child. Attached is the whānau information regarding this lesson.

Next Week:

Year 4-8 Team Day - On Tuesday, all of the teachers from Y4-8 will be out of the classroom.

We hope you all have a great weekend.
