Year 5/6 Novel Studies Fun

Katherine Wilson —

"Reading is like dreaming with your eyes open!"

We are very excited to be spending Term 3 unpacking meaningful themes and growing our reading skills through a variety of great novels. From New Zealand History to Roald Dahl's imagination, we are finding magic wherever we look, all we needed was a good book! (As said by Dr Seuss).

Here are a few of our predictions (what we think we might uncover) while reading some of our novel choices...

Dawn Raid by Pauline Vaeluaga Smith

  • Daniel: "I think that the main character who is poor will find a pot of gold or something to do with money after a natural disaster happens."

  • Toby: "I think that something happens to the main character’s family home."

Superfudge by Judy Blume

  • Shire: "I think Peter will eat all the fudge."

  • George: "I think Peter will be in danger because he is angry at his Mum and Dad."

Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

  • Nikita: "I think Brian might meet someone in the jungle who will work together with him to get back to safety."

  • Enoch: "I think Brian will nearly get eaten by something."

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate

  • Aisla: "I think that Ivan will meet some new friends and that he will escape into the wild."

  • Harley: "I think the story is about a Gorilla named Ivan and he misses the jungle because he was in pet store. But then, he met an elephant and he became friends with the elephant and they lived together."

Canterbury Quake by Desna Wallace

  • Cadence: "I think that there will be an earthquake in Canterbury because the title is Canterbury Quake."

  • David: "It sounds like an earthquake but then I saw a rescue dog on the front cover and I think it's all about saving?"

James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl

  • Zach: "My prediction is that the boy will find a peach tree that only grows once but a super big."

  • Riley: "I think this book is about a peach that grows to be really big."

We look forward to finding out whether our predictions will come true or whether they will change as we read on!
