Cycle Safety!

Donan Ashby —

During our first two weeks back at school the Year 6 students were taught how to be safe when cycling on the road.

The Christchurch City Council came in and took two workshops with our students, providing them with knowledge on how to be prepared to cycle and how to safely act on our roads when they are cycling. Here is some things our students learned:

Valentina: "They taught us how to ride safely on the road and how to start and end our journey. They also taught us how to correctly turn and signal around roundabouts, as well as looking over our shoulders. It was fun and refreshing because we got to ride on the road rather than on the footpath and now I feel more confident biking on the road."

Nikita: "I mainly learned how to ride a bike and how to signal without losing balance. I also learned the basic road rules. At the start I found balancing tricky when I had to indicate to let drivers know where I was going. I enjoyed being out and riding the bikes on the road."

Matthew: "I learned how to indicate using both my hands, how to look around roundabouts and whether the car coming will stop and if I should go or not. I also learned about side and main roads and who goes first when turning. I learned how to put on my helmet correctly and how to mount my bike before I go on the road. My favourite part was when we were crossing busy roads because it was the first time I had done it."
