Green fingers in Year 1&2

Jeni Bargh —

Our children have been learning new skills and developing self-confidence by spending time in our Whetū Gardens, tending plants and growing their own food.

At Discovery time on a Friday the children have been using the produce to create fresh herb dips and delicious salads. Room 3 and 4 are superstars at remembering to water our gardens. Thank you for your mahi Mrs Coker!

Gardening is educational and develops many new skills including:

  • Responsibility –  as they care for plants
  • Understanding – as they learn about cause and effect (for example, plants die without water, weeds compete with plants)
  • Self-confidence – from achieving their goals and enjoying the food they have grown
  • Love of nature – a chance to learn about the outdoor environment in a safe and pleasant place
  • Cooperation – including teamwork
  • Nutrition – learning about where fresh food comes from
