Learning in Mahuta

Urmi Shah —

In Mahuta we have three learning spaces, but how does it all work?

Room 9 is our collaborative space, where children can work and support each other with their learning.

Room 10/11, the open space, is where all of the teaching of our core subjects of Maths, Reading and Writing happens. The teachers introduce the lessons through team teaching and the children are grouped so that the introductions of the lessons are related to skills which they need to learn.

Each teacher then takes a group to focus on specific learning intentions. Room 12 is our silent space for children to work independently. We realise that some children find it difficult to focus when there are people talking nearby, so this is a space for them. It allows them to concentrate on what they are doing without distractions.

Both Room 9 and 12 are set up to encourage self management as the children complete set tasks and choose their activities from a set list of tasks. These are currently related to Reading, Writing and Maths. Kirsten and Tania are our amazing learning coaches. They support the children in these rooms to make good choices which help their learning.

If you would like to hear more about how the children learn from the children themselves, please come along to our "How we learn" evening on Thursday 14th April from 7-8pm.
