Pataitai at Ferrymead

Nicky Hebberd —

We had an exciting day trip to Ferrymead so we could learn about life 50 years ago. This was part of our inquiry into how technology has changed over the last 50 years.

We are exploring life 50 years ago because it leads into our 50 year Merrin School Jubilee in Term 3.

When we got to Ferrymead, we were put into some wonderful costumes... yes the teachers too! These were costumes from both the 1950s and 1960s. This was a very funny and exciting way to start the day.

Once we were changed, we were put into groups so we could explore parts of Ferrymead across the day. Over the course of the day we learned about entertainment, household technology, games and toys and schooling. It is fair to say that the children were feeling pleased that school has changed since then (we also had some adults feeling a little nervous as the memories came rushing back).

We made scones in the bakery with a range of flavours to choose from and the students took these at the end of the day.

At the end of the day we enjoyed the tram ride before taking off our costumes and heading back to school.

Thank you very much to the amazing parent helpers that came with us for the day. We hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did.
