Jean Batten, NZ aviator extraordinaire
Students in years 7/8 have been learning about the extraordinary life of Jean Batten through 'escape room' style activities.
Jean Batten, also known as 'Try Again Girl' and 'Maiden of the Skies', was a remarkable NZ 1930s aviator. She was the first person to make the epic journey from England to New Zealand, making many brave and potentially foolhardy decisions along the way. Jean encountered sandstorms, fuel problems, turbulence, popped tyres, jammed throttles and dangerous landings, showing tremendous resilience.
Students in room 9 have been learning about this remarkable aviator through a series of 'escape room' style activities including multiple code-cracking activities, buzz plane creations, paper plane racing, and Cantamath-style quizzes.
Inspired by Jean's life and the myriad of activities, students chose a text type and got writing! Some students chose to write pick-a-path stories, whilst others focused on writing biographies and information reports. Others wrote diaries or rich descriptions.
